Meet the 2025 Teacher of the Year Finalist- Marlo L. Thigpen
June 6, 2025
For more than 23 years, Marlo Thigpen has been inspiring confidence in students through his passion for mathematics and commitment to their success. As the Mathematics Lead Teacher at Pershing High School, she also serves as the Head Robotics Coach, Instructional Material Coordinator, 11th Grade Lead Teacher, and co-sponsor of the Outdoor Adventure Club. Her commitment to education goes beyond textbooks—she fosters a culture of discipline, perseverance, and self-belief.
An alumnus of Logan Elementary, Golightly Education Center and Cass Tech’s Class of 1990, Thigpen always knew she wanted to give back to the community that raised her. “I wanted to teach students who look like me and come from the same demographic as me,” she shares. This deep connection to her roots drives her mission to empower students, especially those who come into her classroom feeling defeated. But under her guidance, they leave standing tall and confident. Her motto, “Discipline over Desire,” reflects her belief in hard work and resilience.
Thigpen’s Budget Project is a transformative lesson in real-world financial responsibility. Students take on occupations, prioritize budgets, and navigate unexpected life challenges—whether it’s paying rent or dealing with a flat tire. Through this experience, they gain a clear understanding of why higher education is essential for their future stability. Her approach aligns with the district’s mission to Level Up and Rise Up at DPSCD. “Making S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevent, Time-bound) choices that focus on academics is the shift that our district strives towards,” she says, emphasizing the importance of goal-oriented learning.
Beyond academics, Thigpen helps students build a sense of community through small groups and mentorship. She believes in fostering confidence and resilience, knowing that even one student’s breakthrough can ignite change. Her philosophy is simple but powerful: “If you believe in them, then they will believe in themselves. Students will rise to the occasion when you show that you believe in them.”
Honored and shocked to be nominated as a finalist for Teacher of the Year, Thigpen remains humble in her success. “I feel like I have already won and don’t need to be named Teacher of the Year. It is a true honor for my peers to see me in this light.”
Her impact reaches beyond the classroom—she’s shaping future leaders, fostering confidence, and proving that education is more than just lessons; it’s a foundation for success.
Marlo Thigpen’s dedication to education, unwavering belief in her students, and commitment to building a strong community have earned her a well-deserved place as a finalist for the 2025 Teacher of the Year—an honor that reflects the profound impact she continues to make in the lives of those she teaches.
