Meet the 2025 Teacher of the Year Finalist-Michele M. Czarnota

With 32 years of experience in education, Michele Czarnota has devoted her career to supporting and uplifting students with special needs. Currently teaching Special Education at Jerry L. White, she works with 9th to 12th-grade students across multiple subjects, including English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Social Skills. Her impact is profound, fostering an environment where every student is encouraged to learn and grow.

Czarnota has spent 20 years working closely with students on the autism spectrum, ensuring they receive the individualized support they need to thrive. One of her most memorable experiences was working with a nonverbal lower elementary student for over three years. The emotional moment came when, walking down the hallway, the student attempted to say her name—an incredible breakthrough that reaffirmed her dedication to creating a rich and nurturing learning environment. “Feed them and provide them with a rich environment. Never give up.”

Her commitment to her students goes beyond academic achievements—it’s about fostering resilience, expression, and joy. One such rewarding moment came when a student, physically disabled and nonverbal, who had never shown any outward emotion, recently giggled—a small but powerful sign of engagement and progress. “There are academic successes, but then there are moments where students make a small expression, showing their resilience to keep going and not give up.”

Czarnota believes in the power of connection. She ensures her classroom is a welcoming space where students feel engaged and supported. For her, receiving a new student also means welcoming a new family—she actively works to communicate and collaborate with families so they feel involved in their child’s educational journey.

Her philosophy is simple yet transformative: “Everyone has the capacity to learn.” With the right resources, support, and encouragement, special education students can thrive just as much as their peers, proving that potential knows no boundaries.

Her dedication to her students, their families, and the belief that education is a journey for all has earned her a well-deserved place as a finalist for the 2025 Teacher of the Year—an honor that reflects the profound impact she continues to make in shaping lives.
