Paul Robeson Scholarship Event Highlights
On the evening of Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the annual Paul Robeson Scholarship event was held at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. This prestigious competition invites students to reflect on the remarkable life of Paul Robeson—an activist, scholar, athlete, orator, actor, singer, and musician—by writing and presenting essays that explore how he overcame adversity to achieve greatness.
Students from Central High School and Mumford High School participated, reading their powerful essays before a live audience. Central’s own Janiyah Clerk, a proud senior, competed against two talented seniors from Mumford High School. Janiyah delivered a phenomenal reading of her essay, impressing the audience with her poise, passion, and insight.
At the conclusion of the event, Janiyah was awarded 2nd place, receiving a $750 scholarship, a beautiful plaque, and a commemorative Paul Robeson book.
Congratulations, Janiyah! Your hard work, courage, and brilliance continue to make Central High School proud. You will always be a top winner in our eyes. Keep shining bright!
