STEM in the Fast Lane: Ms. Junita Moton and Her Scholars Race Into Learning at the Detroit Grand Prix
Ms. Junita Moton and her STEM scholars closed out the school year with an electrifying experience at the 2025 Detroit Grand Prix, immersing themselves in the fast-paced world of race car engineering, safety, and innovation. Set against the iconic backdrop of downtown Detroit—the heart of the Motor City—this field trip offered students a thrilling, hands-on opportunity to see science, technology, engineering, and math in action.
The day was packed with unforgettable moments as the students engaged directly with the professionals who power the sport: race car drivers, engineers, safety inspectors, and data analysts. Each interaction offered insight into the crucial role STEM plays in the high-stakes environment of professional auto racing.
From analyzing the physics behind speed and traction to understanding how real-time data influences pit strategies and car performance, the students witnessed how textbook concepts come alive on the racetrack. They even explored the mechanics of car design and the importance of precision engineering for both performance and safety.
“I wanted my students to see that STEM is everywhere—even in places they might not expect, like motorsports,” Ms. Moton said. “Watching their eyes light up as they made those connections was the highlight of the trip.”
The experience wasn't just educational—it was inspiring. For many students, the visit sparked new interest in careers they hadn’t previously considered. By stepping into the world of high-speed innovation, they saw firsthand how STEM fields can fuel not only vehicles but also dreams.
As engines roared and tires squealed around tight corners, the Detroit Grand Prix became more than a sporting event—it transformed into a living classroom. And thanks to Ms. Moton’s leadership, these scholars wrapped up their school year with both a sense of accomplishment and acceleration toward a future full of possibilities.
