From Pen to Prize: Derrick’s Theme Leads Edison to Bookstock

Edison’s 4th Graders Celebrated at the Bookstock Best Book Fair!

Edison Elementary was proud to celebrate a special literacy opportunity for our 4th-grade students, thanks to our school’s involvement with Bookstock. As part of this recognition, students in Ms. Sharpe’s and Ms. Graves’s classes were invited by the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) to attend the Bookstock Annual Book Fair. This joyful event celebrated books, creativity, and a love of reading.

This invitation was made even more special by the achievement of one of our very own students, Derrick, who authored the 2025 Bookstock Writing Contest theme: “MY FAVORITE BOOK CHARACTER… AND WHY.” Derrick’s thoughtful and creative submission helped shine a spotlight on Edison’s commitment to literacy and played a key role in earning this opportunity for the entire 4th-grade team.

At the Bookstock Best Book Fair, students enjoyed browsing a wide selection of books and choosing titles that sparked their interest. Each participating student received a custom limited-edition DPSCD x Bookstock t-shirt, a tote bag, and Bookstock Bucks to spend at the fair. The experience not only allowed students to build their libraries but also deepened their enthusiasm for reading.

We are incredibly proud of Derrick for his inspiring contribution and of all our 4th graders for representing Edison with excitement and pride. Our heartfelt thanks go to DPSCD and Bookstock for supporting literacy and recognizing our students in such a meaningful way.

With experiences like these, we continue to build a community of readers—one book and one story at a time!
