Little Hands, Big Plant Helpers
First Graders Take on Plant Care with Excitement
Edison Elementary’s first-grade students are taking on responsibility and exploring science through a brand-new series of classroom jobs. One of the most exciting roles introduced is the Plant Monitor and Caretaker, a position that quickly captured students’ interest.
Ms. Russell explained the important role plants play in our lives and why caring for them matters. Students learned that the caretaker’s job includes gently removing dead leaves, checking the soil for dryness, watering plants when needed, and even deciding if a plant is in the right spot to receive enough sunlight.
The young scholars were not only intrigued but also enthusiastic about their new duties. They eagerly observed the classroom plants, discussing what they noticed and sharing ideas about how to help them grow strong and healthy. Ms. Russell also introduced the concept of propagation, sparking the students' enthusiasm with the hope that they could grow enough plants for every child to take one home.
With wide eyes and big smiles, Edison’s first-graders are learning that even the smallest hands can make a big difference when it comes to caring for living things.
