Interviews to Snapshots
A group of dedicated 10th grade English students from Cass Technical High School—Chloe, London, Anissa, and Ahmiyah—have taken on an ambitious multimodal project that combines journalism, photography, and social engagement. For their focus, they chose a topic that impacts students across the city: reading proficiency levels among K–12 students in Detroit.
To deepen their understanding and gather firsthand information, the group visited our school. During their visit, they engaged with teachers to discuss student performance in core academic subjects, especially reading. The high school students asked thoughtful questions about the challenges educators face and the strategies they use to support literacy development in the classroom.
In addition to interviews, the group documented their visit through photography—capturing images of classroom settings, learning materials, and educational tools. They also explored how technology and specific applications are being used to improve student outcomes.
Through this project, the Cass Tech students hope to bring attention to both the struggles and strides being made in literacy education throughout Detroit’s public schools. Their work not only informs but also inspires conversations about equity, education, and community impact.
