On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, Marcus Garvey Academy hosted its first Clubs & Teams Celebration Banquet in Harambee from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Students, staff, and families came together to honor the hard work and accomplishments of student participants in both athletics and academic clubs.
Student-athletes were recognized for their dedication in basketball, soccer, volleyball, cheerleading, track, and flag football. Academic clubs were also celebrated, including Robotics and the Debate team, which had a standout year.
The Debate team took part in the district-wide Soapbox Challenge, where students addressed current social issues through powerful speeches. Out of the 11 students who competed in the championship round, Marcus Garvey was proud to have three finalists:
  • Dareall S. advocated for free public transit in the city of Detroit.
  • Jaeyden A. delivered a passionate speech on the importance of keeping TikTok and resisting its ban.
  • Major C.  focused on the significance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in America.
The evening also highlighted impressive athletic performances from the Track & Field teams:

5/6 Grade Girls – 12th place overall (out of 14 teams)
  • Faith D.: 2nd place in the 400m (out of 39 runners)
  • Lovely S.: 13th in the 400m
  • Shot Put: Angel S. & Ganesa T.
  • 100m: Dylan S., Angel S., Caleah B.
  • 200m: Dylan S., Lovely S., Caleah B.
  • 4x100m Relay: Dylan S., Lovely S., Faith D., Angel S. – 9th place out of 16 teams
5/6 Grade Boys – 11th place overall (out of 16 teams)
  • 100m (out of 45 runners): Decary J. (8th), Jhermiah S. (11th), Markcus S. also competed
  • 200m: Decary J. (7th), Elijah W. & Markcus S. also competed
  • 4x100m Relay: Elijah W., Jhermiah S., Levi W., Decary J. – 7th out of 10 teams
7/8 Grade Girls – 4th place overall with 29 points
  • 100m (out of 51 runners): Morgan R.(3rd), ZaNyah J. & Geneva T. also competed
  • 200m (out of 27): ZaNyah J. (7th), London H. (13th)
  • 400m (out of 36): Daija B. (6th), Hayden S. (7th), Rakylah B. (11th)
  • Shot Put (out of 23): London H. (7th, with a throw of 23’7”), Chyna F. also competed
  • 4x100m Relay: Hayden S., London H., Morgan R., ZaNyah J. – 5th out of 15 teams
  • 4x400m Relay: Morgan R., Geneva T., ZaNyah J., Hayden S. – 1st Place Finish!
Families enjoyed light refreshments as students were awarded for their excellence in teamwork, perseverance, and leadership. With attendance limited to two adults per student, the setting remained warm, personal, and celebratory.
The banquet was a proud moment for the Marcus Garvey community, showcasing well-rounded students who shine both on the field and in the classroom.
