Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) along with the DTE Energy Foundation, Quicken Loans Community Fund, the Skillman Foundation, General Motors and the Kellogg Foundation is addressing a historical digital divide through the Connected Futures Project, which allows all students who were enrolled during the spring Membership Count (February 2020) to receive wireless tablets and six months of internet access through a $23 million investment.
The initiative will enable 51,000 students and families to receive wireless tablets and internet access for in-home use at the end of the 2019-20 school year. These devices include six months of subsidized LTE data, immediately connecting students without wired internet connections at home, and will be the property of the student and family.
How can my child claim their tablet?
The District is excited to start deploying devices for the Connected Futures project. Eligibility emails were sent to each child's District email account in June. Surveys were sent to student email accounts as this was the best way to secure the family's contact information and activate internet access. Families will also receive calls from their school principal and other communications about the location, day, and times for deployment.
Learn to access your child's email by watching the video below and by accessing the Microsoft Shortcuts section of Clever. Take the survey for each child you would like to participate, and you will receive the details for pick up as soon as the survey is completed. If you are still unsure of how to access your child's email or don’t have a way to do so, please call the DPSCD service desk between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday at 313-576-0100, or call your child's school.
What tech support is available?
The video below provides parents and students a tutorial to set up their device.
During the six months following the initial deployment of tablets, the District plans to partner with the City of Detroit and the social enterprise non-profit, Human IT, to help families sign up for low-cost subsidized internet services. Families will receive technical support on their new device, as well as navigation services that will help them take advantage of internet access.By the end of the subsidized data period, in December 2020, the District will support DPSCD families who are actively using the services for educational programming and are in need of continued internet service. Students will be encouraged to bring their devices to school in the fall to continue the narrowing of the student-to-device ratio throughout the District.
