Chalk Talk
Harms Elementary School teachers and students are implementing some creative EL protocols in their classrooms. During a Wednesday PLC meeting, assistant principal, Maria Gauchey, modeled the "Chalk Talk" protocol for teachers. "A Chalk Talk is a silent activity that provides all students the opportunity to reflect on what they know, and then share their thinking and wonderings, while connecting to the thoughts of their classmates. Despite the name, there is no chalk involved, only paper and pencils or markers (Scholastic.com)." Mrs. Pauls's second grade class is participating in a Chalk Talk about, "Why it is hard for children in Bangladesh to go to school?" (EL Module 1 Unit 2 "Challenges in Going to School.") Students stated they enjoyed sharing their thoughts and ideas with their friends and the chalk talk helped them to ask good questions.
