Student Achievement
Student achievement is the number one goal at Thurgood Marshall Elementary/Middle School. Through a tough curriculum, students are challenged to reach their fullest potential and encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning.
Our curriculum includes Language Arts (EL Education), Mathematics (Eureka Math), Science (Mystery Science), Social Studies.

Mathematics
The mathematics curriculum is fully aligned to state standards—what students are expected to learn and be able to do at the end of each grade level. The Math for 1-8 is called Eureka Math and it encourages mathematics-rich classroom environments. The new math promotes rigor, relevance, and relationships in mathematics classrooms. Social Studies
Our Social Studies curriculum is aligned with the Michigan State Standards. As called for by the standards in the primary grades, the curriculum begins introducing students to disciplines of social studies such as geography, economics, history, civics, and government through familiar, age-appropriate concepts. Concepts become increasingly more complex as students matriculate. In grades five through eight, our courses emphasize the national geography and history standards. Creative Writing for Grade 4
Creative Writing is introduced in Grade 4 to help students develop a passion for writing, practice their reading comprehension, build their vocabulary, work on spelling, grammatical or structural skills. It is also designed to help the child think and dream big.
Homework Hotline
The Detroit Public Schools Community District Homework Hotline is a free resource available for all DPSCD students that encourages outstanding achievement by giving students an additional platform to ask for help and emphasize problem-solving skills. Students and families can call in for help with Literacy and/or Math homework. The Homework Hotline is provided in partnership with United Way for Southeastern Michigan.
The Homework Hotline will be offered during the academic year on Monday – Thursday, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Homework Hotline will not operate on days that schools are closed for holidays.

Students, parents, and families are able to access many online learning tools to help them succeed in and out of the classroom.
The online tools that students can utilize outside of the classroom are as follows:

- Khan Academy
- Newsela
DPSCD uses a Clever for single sign-on access for many of the tools mention above. Please go to https://clever.com/in.dpscd. Students can use their username and password. They choose one of the applications. If you have any questions about accessing the online learning tools, please contact your child's homeroom teacher.
LEGO Education Wedo 2.0 (Robotics)
In Grades 3-4, LEGO Education Wedo 2.0 (Robotics) is a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math based program to get students involved with engineering and computer programming. Students learn how to build designs with LEGOs to make a Cooling system, a Robot and many more. The program introduces our students to coding and engineering concepts at a early age.
