Ms. Jennifer Spencer

Meet Principal Jennifer Spencer

Jennifer Spencer is a seasoned educator and administrator with a proven track record of excellence, demonstrated by her transformative accomplishments in schools and districts across Detroit and beyond. Her leadership is most notable for driving meaningful change in the following areas:

  • School Improvement and Accountability
  • High Student Achievement
  • Safe and Welcoming Learning Environments
  • Family and Community Engagement
  • Data-Driven Decision Making

A proud graduate of Purdue University and Wayne State University, Principal Spencer's academic foundation is as diverse as her career. She studied Psychology, Mathematics, Science, Educational Leadership, and Guidance and Counseling—preparing her to lead with a well-rounded perspective.

Principal Spencer’s leadership style is grounded in relationship-building, collaboration, and problem-solving. Whether she is supporting a student, teacher, parent, or community member, she approaches every interaction with respect and compassion. “When people come to the principal, their issue is very important to them, and they deserve to be heard. I may not always be able to say ‘yes,’ but I will listen, investigate, and follow up in a timely manner,” she explains. Her ability to de-escalate conflicts and foster calm, productive environments has been a key factor in the consistent retention of both staff and students under her leadership.

Jennifer Spencer’s integrity, enthusiasm, creativity, strong moral character, and unwavering dedication to providing all students with an exemplary education are at the heart of her work. These qualities, combined with her vision and interpersonal skills, ensure she brings a unique and valuable perspective to John R. King Academic and Performing Arts Academy.

Winans Academy of Performing Arts. Additionally, she was honored to lead other exceptional schools, including Bates Academy, University Prep Science and Math Middle School, and New Paradigm schools: Loving and University YES.
