Garvey Families,
Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year! We are thrilled to welcome our students and staff back to school on Monday, August 25 at 9:00a.m. It is our goal to have all students present on the first day of school. Garvey will have special events and prizes for all students that attend school on the first day! We look forward to a wonderful new school year as we are ”On The Rise” at Garvey Academy!
Our incredible staff of educators have been in professional development throughout the summer to prepare for the new school year. Garvey Academy is such a special place to learn and grow. We are proud of our beautiful school and have high expectations for each student. Together with our dedicated staff, we strive to make connections with students to help them feel valued, accepted, and safe. Our motto, ”I Can Learn, I Will Learn, I Must Learn. I'm a Garveyite!” will continue to guide our mission to provide a rigorous and joyful, inclusive school environment.
Academics are crucial. Students receive progress reports and report cards each quarter, but parents always have access to view their child's performance. Download the PowerSchool Mobile App onto your mobile device to have 24 hours of access to schedules, grades, progress reports, report cards, and assignments. Email qarvey.fax@detroitk12.org or wakeita.winston@detroitkJ2.org for directions and log-on credentials.
Garvey is growing this school year. Additional classrooms will be added to ensure all students are able to receive a quality education from Pre K-8 grade. Garvey will also become an Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Hub.
Garvey will house 11 ESE programs to service our students with special needs. With that, Garvey will have an additional Assistant Principal, counselor, behavioral teacher, and two additional elective teachers. With the changes, some classrooms will move. Second grade will now become a part of the red village and wear a red uniform shirt.
Do not forget to purchase uniforms. The stock becomes limited if you wait until the end of August to buy uniforms.
The Uniform
- Green polo-style shirt- Grades Pre K through 1st (Some 2nd graders will wear a green shirt in selected ESE classes)
- Red polo-style shirt-Grades 2-5
- Black polo-style shirt Grades 6-8
- Black pants or skirts Pre K through 8
- Red, black or green uniform sweater-No hoods
- Any color gym shoe (no shoes with wheels)
No hoodies, leggings, jogging pants, clothing with rips, crocs, sandals, slides, belts with huge buckles, hats, ski masks, chains with huge charms/medallions, head scarfs (unless it's an African head wrap), bonnets, and pajamas.
We are excited to embrace this school year. Attendance is key to ensuring a successful school year. Data has proven if students are chronically absent (absent 18 days of school or more), it affects their academics negatively. Tardies and early dismissals have negative impacts too. If students must be picked up early, call Attendant Agent Sonja Johnson. No students will be dismissed early, after 3:30pm. Last school year, the district implemented a 45- day attendance policy. If students miss more than 45 days of school, they will be retained. Please remember students must attend school every day and on time!
Educationally yours,
Mama Winston
