Jose Maldonado

WESTERN INTERNATIONAL CLASS OF 2001

Coach, Entrepreneur, Restauranteur, Construction, and Project Management

Jose Maldonado has never been one to stay rooted in one place. Over the past 15 years in the construction industry, he has lived and worked in more than seven states. His most recent project, the Gordie Howe International Bridge Project, holds special significance for him, as it brings him back to work in the very neighborhood where he grew up—a true full-circle moment. Since graduating from Western International High School 25 years ago, Jose has remained deeply connected to the community. He has had the honor of mentoring students by coaching the swim team at Western and has spent over nine years coaching with the Southwest Aztecs Baseball Organization.

Alongside fellow Western alumni, Jose co-owned two restaurants in Southwest Detroit—Toma Detroit and Peso. Most recently, he earned his master’s degree in construction management from Southern New Hampshire University, furthering both his career and his commitment to the community.

Western International High School didn’t just educate Jose; it fueled his ambition. As an underdog, he learned to rise, compete, and never settle for less than his best.

Personal Quote:

“You don’t get to write your own obituary.  What you get to do is live your life, and that’s okay because in there is your power.  You do good, you help others, you say thank you, and you will not just live a better life – you will live forever!”
