Manuel Martinez
WESTERN INTERNATIONAL CLASS OF 2008
Engineer, Architect, Site Manager and Estimator.
Manuel Martinez was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to the United States with his family just before the turn of the millennium. His parents, both immigrants, made the courageous decision to relocate in search of better opportunities and a brighter future for him and his two sisters.
He graduated from Western International High School in Detroit in the class of 2008. Following high school, Manuel attended the University of Michigan, where he earned dual Master’s degrees in Engineering and Architecture.
Currently, he serves as a Senior Superintendent (Site Manager, Estimator for the Hemingway Project) at The Christman Company. In this role, he has had the privilege of leading several groundbreaking projects, including:
- Overseeing the first construction project in collaboration with Cuba since the Cold War, which involved the creation of a new preservation lab in Havana, Cuba, at the Ernest Hemingway Estate.
- Playing a key role in the restoration of the Michigan Central Train Station, managing all aspects of the exterior and the tower interior.
- Leading current projects such as the Detroit Riverfront, Ralph Wilson Centennial Park, featuring its iconic giant bear sculpture, and the upcoming restoration of the Belle Isle Fountain and Aquarium.
Reflecting on his journey, Manuel is deeply grateful for the education and support he received at Western International High School. His teachers and coaches believed in him more than he believed in himself, and their faith in his abilities inspired him to strive for excellence. His passion for revitalizing Detroit is evident in his dedication to restoring the city's historic landmarks and contributing to its resurgence. He is committed to bringing back Detroit to its former glory, not only for the current generation but for all those to follow.
Manuel's story is one of inspiration, showcasing the profound impact of education, community support, and a relentless drive to make a difference. His achievements serve as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the incredible possibilities that lie ahead for those who dare to dream and work hard to achieve their goals.
