Flying High: Davis Aerospace Student to Attend MIAT College of Technology

Davis Aerospace Technical High School senior Nialah Crosby is preparing for takeoff —her destination is MIAT College of Technology this fall. With scholarships from various organizations and programs, she will join MIAT’s Robotics and Automation program in Canton, Mich.

Since she was 5 years old, Nialah knew that she wanted to fly. It was at this age that she met the Detroit Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen who were doing a presentation at Northland Mall. By 11 years old, Nialah was co-piloting planes and power gliders in the Young Eagles Tuskegee Airman Program and soon after, she joined the Civil Air Patrol. The Civil Air Patrol has a unique youth development program for their cadets, which teaches aviation, leadership and emergency services. Still involved with the organization, Nialah recently received a promotion to Cadet Deputy Commander in Civil Air Patrol Detroit 100th Squadron.

Nialah has attended Davis Aerospace Technical High School since she was a freshman and has been a part of the Career and Technical Education Flight Training program, where students learn a variety of concepts and regulations related to unmanned and manned flight. She is also preparing to test for her remote pilot’s license in order to be able to join the field of commercial drone piloting. Davis Aerospace is one of the only schools in the country to train students to fly Cessna aircrafts. Additionally, Nialah has been a part of the Robotics team at Davis Aerospace.

Crowned Miss Juneteenth by a team of community leaders from The New Community, Juneteenth Detroit, and Jefferson Chalmers Riverside Development Corporation, Nialah was recognized for her commitment growing her STEM skills and helping more girls of color get into STEM fields.

Davis Aerospace has a rich legacy of graduates who are making their mark in aviation. More information on enrolling at Davis Aerospace Technical High School at Golightly as well as general information about the school can be found at https://www.detroitk12.org/davisaerospace.
