Back-to-School Guide
We are ready to ROAR!
Monday, August 12, 2024
As students and their families prepare to close out the summer with last-minute vacations, the District is ready to ROAR! Back-to-School. With less than two weeks to the start of the 2024-25 school year, we want to ensure families are prepared to return their students to the classroom.
We are excited to share with you the Back-to-School website, which will provide families with critical information and wrap-around resources for a successful transition. Be sure to print and save a copy of the 2024-25 Academic Calendar to stay on top of important dates.
Back-to-School Need to Know
- Public Safety: For the safety of all our DPSCD students, the Office of Public Safety encourages families to establish a safety plan for the 2024-25 school year. Families are encouraged to contact their student's school to understand safety protocols and procedures. Contact DPSCD Public Safety by phone at 313-748-6000. If you have a non-school related emergency, please call 911.
- Parent Toolbox: Families, please visit the Parent Toolbox for quick access to tools you’ll need all year. We recommend bookmarking this page; it will help you with navigating PowerSchool login, ESE Support, the Family Hub, student resources, and volunteer opportunities.
- Athletics: The fall sports season has begun. To learn more about DPSCD sports programs for your student and the eligibility requirements, visit the Student Support Athletic page.
- Exceptional Student Education (ESE): Families, please contact the Office of Exceptional Student Education for more information about resources available to your student. Visit the ESE page for information on programs and services provided by the District.
- Family and Community Engagement (FACE): The Office of Family and Community Engagement supports families to advocate for their students by providing valuable resources. FACE oversees the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and the Parent Academy, the Student Leadership Program, the Homeless and Foster Care, volunteers and so much more. Explore the Parent Academy Catalog or a full schedule of free workshops, training and fun activities for all ages.
- Volunteer Program: Become a DPSCD Volunteer and Sign up today! Choose to be a greeter, noon-hour aide, Let’s Read volunteer or many other options that can contribute to our students’ rise. Per DPSCD policy all volunteers must submit or renew their volunteer status through the galaxy volunteer process. This year Let’s Read volunteers have paid incentives. If you have questions or need further information, contact the FACE office at 313-873-7490.
- Office of School Nutrition (OSN): Stay up to date on your student's nutrition as DPSCD offers free breakfast and lunch. Visit the OSN page for more details and nutritional programs.
- Behavioral Health and Wellness: DPSCD is committed to supporting the whole child. Make sure you take the Universal Wellness Screening this fall so we can support your well-being. To learn more about our health initiatives, including immunization, visit the Physical Health Partnership page.
Health-related Services and Initiatives
- Nurse: DPSCD schools have a nurse who provides health services. Students in center-based schools may have a 1:1 nurse to provide specialized care.
- Dental and Vision Services: Onsite dental services are provided for students; vision screening and glasses for students in need.
- Behavioral Health Services: In addition to school social workers and school counselors, the District has a partnership with multiple behavioral health agencies that provide behavioral health services directly inside all our schools.
- School-Based Health Center: Our school-based health center partners provide students with a full spectrum of health-related services, from physicals to managing chronic disease, behavioral health issues, and more.
- Immunizations: We provide childhood immunizations, COVID, and Flu vaccines through our traveling Nurse Vaccine Team.
