The Michigan Legislature has allowed districts to consider modifications specific to the State of Michigan graduation requirements when requested.
This individualized credit requirement and/or content expectation modification is called a Personal Curriculum (PC).
The majority of students will exit high school with a diploma without the help of a PC, but for some students, a PC can provide the modifications necessary for them to earn a high school diploma. A personal curriculum may be requested for one of four reasons:
- Students who are interested in earning additional credits in math, science, English language arts, or foreign languages.
PC Enrichment - Students who demonstrate a need to reduce the Algebra II requirement in the Michigan Merit Curriculum.
PC Algebra - Students transferring from out-of-state or nonpublic schools after completing two years of high school.
PC Transfer - Students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
PC IED

Greetings DPSCD Families,
Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) remains committed to providing all students with the highest quality education and support. There is a national critical shortage impacting our ability to provide continuous specialized services in select areas to students requiring school-based ancillary support. School districts nationwide report challenges in recruiting and hiring support services, including school social workers, school psychologists, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists.
We continue to actively seek solutions to address this issue, including the exploration of expanding our number of contracting agencies, virtual resources, and the provision of compensatory services. While we are working diligently to mitigate the impact of this shortage, it is essential for you, as parents and guardians, to be aware of the efforts we are making to ensure your child’s needs are met.
Please read our full statement on the Ancillary Critical Shortage below.

What is Crisis Prevention Institute: Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI)?
Crisis Prevention Institute: Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI: NVCI) is a non-violent crisis prevention program with a focus on proactive responses and de-escalation. Our core training program equips staff with proven strategies for safely defusing anxious, defensive, or violent behavior at the earliest possible stage and using physical intervention as a last resort.
Who can participate in CPI: NVCI?
Detroit Public Schools Community District has certified trainers of Crisis Prevention Institute: Nonviolent Crisis Intervention. Training is provided to our School-based crisis teams that have been identified by the building principal and all ESE staff. Staff that participate in the training will be provided with the skills to safely recognize and respond to everyday crisis situations. The training complies with all current legislation and is fully accredited so that staff can earn continuing education credits.
- Prevention & verbal de-escalation skills
- Disengagement safety techniques
- Risk assessment framework
- Physical intervention techniques.
For more information about CPI/NVCI please contact Dr. Adrima Caesar at adrima.caesar@detroitk12.org
