Translations and Interpretations

  • Over the Phone Language Support

    • Families please contact the school directly to request an interpreter and/or to have applicable documents translated. 
    • Language Line - 866-879-1195 Only for DPSCD staff, specifically, enrollment secretaries, teachers, and administrators at the school level are authorized to access the code. 
    • If you do not have access or require further guidance, contact Tina Villarreal-Hernandez at 313-212-4312 or email tina.villarreal-hernandez@detroitk12.org.

    On-Site and Virtual Interpretation and Translation options include ASL via email and Ticketing System (Cherwell). This includes interpreters and translated documents such as Special Education legal forms and interpreters for an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Meeting. 

    Guidance for DPSCD Staff Only 

    • Submit a Help Desk ticket via Cherwell to request Interpretation and Translation services, including American Sign Language (ASL). Consult the Hub for a brief tutorial.
    • Please note that interpreters must be requested 5–7 days in advance.
    • Document translations must be requested 7–10 days in advance, with a 100-word minimum, even for updates to previously translated documents.
    • Missed appointments with onsite or virtual interpreters should be avoided! Each missed appointment costs the District $150.
    • For additional Cherwell support, contact ​translation.request@detroitk12.org or Tina Villarreal-Hernandez at (313) 212-4312.
    • For emergency interpretation and translation requests (i.e., health or safety) contact Erica Lopez Negrete.
    • To request an interpreter at a Board Meeting, contact Vania Moore at (313) 873-7861. Please note that Arabic, Spanish, and ASL interpreters are present at all Board Meetings. Reach out if another language is required.
